چکیده

The Deep Ultra-Violet Free Electron Laser (DUVFEL) at the National Synchrotron Light Source consists of a 5MeV photoinjector, a 200MeV S-band linear accelerator, a four-magnet chicane compressor and a 10m wiggler with a 3.9 cm period. The commissioning of the SDL accelerator was completed recently and it is routinely producing a highquality electron beam with a peak current of B400A and a normalised emittance of 3–4mmmrad. The first SASE lasing of the DUV FEL has been demonstrated at both 266 and 400 nm. The gain length of the SASE experiments was measured to be 66 cm in both cases and up to 20 nJ per pulse was obtained. A laser seeded FEL at 266 nm is in the very early stages of commissioning and amplification of the laser seed has been observed. The goal of the seeded laser FEL is to saturate the FEL and thereby generate sufficient third harmonic at 89 nm for experimental applications. Here we report the observation and measurements of SASE at 400 and 266 nm and the first results of seeded FEL. r 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

First operation of a harmonic lasing self-seeded free electron laser

Harmonic lasing is a possible mode of operation of X-ray FEL user facilities that allows us to provide brilliant beams of higher energy photons for user experiments. Another useful application of harmonic lasing is the so-called harmonic lasing self-seeded free electron laser (HLSS FEL) that allows the improvement of spectral brightness of these facilities. In the past, harmonic lasing has been...

Experimental study of a high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron laser in the ultraviolet

050701-1 Saturation of a high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron laser (HGHG-FEL) at 266 nm has been accomplished at the Brookhaven National Laboratory/Deep Ultra Violet Free Electron Laser Facility (BNL/DUV-FEL) by seeding with an 800 nm Ti:sapphire laser. We describe the diagnostics used to characterize the electron beam and the FEL output. Analytic and simulation calculations of the HGHG...

Chirped Pulse Amplification of HGHG-FEL at DUV-FEL Facility at BNL

The DUV-FEL facility has been in operation in High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) mode for one year producing 266 nm output from 177 MeV electrons. In this paper we present preliminary results of the Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) of HGHG radiation. In the normal HGHG process, a 1 ps electron beam is seeded by chirped 9 ps long 800 nm Ti:Sapphire laser. The electron beam sees only a narrow ...

Near-infrared Free Electron Laser Experiment with the Storage Ring Niji-iv

FEL experiments in the NIR region were carried out with a compact storage ring NIJI-IV at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Spontaneous emission spectra from the optical klystron ETLOK-III were measured at wavelengths around 850 nm. High-reflectance cavity mirrors were set in mirror chambers this August. The cavity loss was measured to be about 0.2%, and the ...

2 2 M ay 2 00 2 Scheme for Attophysics Experiments at a X - ray SASE FEL

We propose a concept for production of high power coherent attosecond pulses in X-ray range. An approach is based on generation of 8th harmonic of radiation in a multistage HGHG FEL (high gain high harmonic free electron laser) configuration starting from shot noise. Single-spike phenomena occurs when electron bunch is passed through the sequence of four relatively short undulators. The first s...
